Charlie Wooton Project PDF Print E-mail

“Louisiana-Bass-Driven” funk with hints of the Caribbean, West Africa and Brasil. Charlie Wooton has forged many musical relationships and explored a dizzying array of musical avenues in his twenty-plus years of performing – and now they all coalesce in the Charlie Wooton Project. The group is anchored by Wooton (bass), however longtime Wooton collaborator Jody Davies helps compose and arrange the band's original material. The band is also joined by a rotating cast of musicians from Atlanta's musical family to offer up a fresh take on their live performance, such as Oliver Wood, Caroline Aiken, Heather Luttrell, Marcus Henderson, Sonny Emory and Count M'butu. Wooton was once Count M’Butu’s musical director. Other musicians such as Jeff Coffin(Bela Fleck, Dave Mathews Band) and Jeff Sipe(Phil Lesh) are scheduled to be featured at upcoming shows. "If you're gonna be a repeat customer I want you to have a new experience every time," says Wooton. His personal experience with West African, Brasilian and Zydeco as well as other World music styles drive the adventurous nature of the Charlie Wooton Project. The group, which was already handpicked to open for BB King at a recent Georgia run of gigs, can seamlessly move from elegant solo bass pieces to roof-raising hip-shaking barnstormers buoyed by lively improvisation and enjoyed by a diverse audience.

Wooton has benefited greatly from his ever-curious mind, taking something from every musician he met.  He still plays a treasured bass given to him by Kim Stone (Spyro Gyra, Rippingtons), a childhood idol that Wooton first befriended and later astonished with his bass acumen and learning abilities while in Los Angeles in the nineties. By the way, Delaney Guitars is in the process of building Charlie a beautiful custom made REDWOOD BASS! As a result Wooton's playing is informed by these varied experiences, and fueled by his zest for recreating his music with every performance. Fronting many area bands (most notably Zydefunk, who recorded their self-titled CD at Atlanta’s esteemed Tree Sound Studios) Wooton has become one of the most endearing and compelling musicians in the Atlanta musical community. Currently the “Project” is releasing their self titled debut CD April 4th. CWP has picked the Nationally acclaimed Eddie's Attic to have their CD release Party.

Meanwhile.. Zydefunk, his other band has just been asked to do a live C.D. at TreeSound and will feature special guest Michael Doucet of Beausoleil and Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band.
Charlie Wooton Project will be touring  and head lining this year nationally promoting their new C.D. , be sure to catch them in New Orleans 2010 Jazz Fest at Chickie Wa Wa and the Louisiana Folk Roots Fest- you can also catch last years folk roots Fest with him and Michael Doucet singing "You are my Sunshine in French"..
